New Doll — Birdie

I just put this doll up for sale on my Etsy shop for $35.  I wanted to make something simple after the last one.

Birdie is a 21″ companion or bed-doll. I was inspired by some of the sweet elder women I see walking through parks, feeding birds and enjoying life. She just beams with happiness and is happy to take a minute to listen.

She’s hand-stitched from cotton fabric with acrylic yarn. Her body is a bit abstract, but I wanted her to have a bird spirit and found this little piece of bird fabric that suited her perfectly. She is partly stuffed with rice to help her sit, but she still needs a little back support. I love the sort of goofy, languid look the extra long arms give her. They are loosely stuffed with thick yarn and are very limber. (She’s been doing her yoga!)

Her face is needle-sculpted and hand painted. She wears hummingbird earrings bought at a hummingbird festival in Mississippi.

Sad news from the Memphis Child Advocacy Center

I wanted to share the sad news I got from the Memphis Child Advocacy Center this morning.  Their work is so important in preventing violence against children, but it’s still prevalent.

Work of Heart in Progress Day Four

I got a late start today on my Work of Heart doll for the Memphis Child Advocacy Center and didn’t get as much finished as I’d have liked.  She’s really starting to take shape and develop a personality, though.  I got the hair on and the pose figured out.  She really wouldn’t conform to the original pose I’d sketched out, but wanted a more upward motion.  Her hands are so big they want to hold up the sky.

The Full pose
The hair is made of wool, acrylic and cotton
I love her rooty feet

There will be a lot of embellishment work tomorrow.  I’m going to put lots of green leaves and vines around her body.  I think I’ll call this piece “Spring from the Heart.”  I have a perfect butterfly to put in her hand — something I found at a thrift shop.
